Racist lecturer. [Apr. 2nd, 2006|08:02 pm]
Finally- Wanker.

The University of Leeds has today begun disciplinary proceedings against Dr Frank Ellis, a lecturer in Russian and Slavonic Studies.

The details of the disciplinary process must remain a private matter between the University, as employer, and Dr Ellis, as employee. But I can confirm that we are looking into three issues.

The first is that, in publicising his personal views on race and other matters, Dr Ellis has acted in breach of our equality and diversity policy, and in a way that is wholly at odds with our values. The University’s values are rooted in the values of a civilised, 21st-century society; and they include the values of diversity, inclusiveness, equal opportunity, community and mutual respect. It is explicitly stated in our Charter that the University is proud to be a multi-cultural community.

The second issue is that, in publicising his personal views on race, Dr Ellis has recklessly jeopardised the fulfilment of the University’s obligations under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. As a public body, the University is required under that Act to promote good relations between people of different racial groups. That is a requirement we are happy to accept.

Thirdly, Dr Ellis has failed to comply with reasonable requests given to him by his employer. For example, we asked him to apologise for the distress which his remarks on race and other matters have caused to many people inside and outside the University. He has not agreed to do that. Nor has he given us an undertaking to make it clear in public that scientific questions about the differences if any between different racial groups are questions which lie a long way from his own area of academic expertise as a lecturer in Russian and Slavonic Studies. And he has failed to give us an undertaking that he will make no further public comments suggesting that one racial group is inherently inferior (or superior) to another unless there is no possibility whatsoever that anyone hearing or reading his comments might reasonably associate him with the University of Leeds. The University is clearly and publicly distancing itself from Dr Ellis’s comments on race.

Given the seriousness of the issues I have been outlining, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Arthur, has decided to suspend Dr Ellis from his duties while the disciplinary process is underway. Professor Arthur saw Dr Ellis this afternoon to tell him of that decision. I must emphasise that suspension is not in itself a disciplinary penalty.

The disciplinary process might take some time to complete –certainly weeks rather than days, and perhaps months rather than weeks. The University intends to make no further public comment on the case until the conclusion of that disciplinary process.

University Secretary

From my Work Intranet page today:

We have now confirmed that there are six Atkins staff who have died in the Bahrain boat tragedy and two friends/relatives are also dead with one more still missing. We have spent today ensuring that the Bahrain office has been supported in contacting the next of kin and we are trying to ensure that all family members who need to travel from various places in the UK, Europe and India will have both flights and hotels booked and people to meet them when they arrive in Bahrain.

That is really really sad.

They were celebrating putting the roof on the Bahrain world trade centre and the boat wasnt even meant to go out onto the water, it was a moored restraunt boat, how do these things happen?

MMMM MEATY BEER [Dec. 19th, 2005|12:08 am]
FOR RHYS, MAINLY

I was drinking in the pub this evening with Rhys and friends and i noticed he was drinking Guinness. Someone had once told me that Guinness contained Pig's blood and wasn't vegetarian. Rhys hadn't heard this before and to be honest it does sound like one of those urban legends. So i did some research (for the purpose of being helpful and trying to help those meat-avoiders out there, not to say i told you so) and i found out interestingly that MOST beers and some wines aren't vegetarian AT ALL. Infact most of the major brands contain animal products. Guinness contains the stomach contents/swim bladders of tropical fish to help refine the stout.

Heres an email i found on a vege website from Guinness, and some other interesting facts.

Serious vegetarians know to keep on the lookout for isinglass and other animal products in their beer. Isinglass is a fish-derived additive that's primarily used to help speed up the clarification of cask-conditioned ales, although some beer-makers will use it to reclaim batches that didn't filter properly. You can help keep your diet swimbladder-free with this awesome list.

Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail.

ISINGLASS
All Guinness brands are free from animal matter and from contact with animal matter. However, isinglass, which is a by-product of the fishing industry, is used as a fining agent for settling out suspended matter in the vat. The isinglass is retained in the floor of the vat but it is possible that small quantities might be carried over into the beer.

ALTERNATIVES
Production processes in the UK are subject to strict UK/EU legislation and at present isinglass is the only fining agent suitable for stout, which has been approved in the UK. Any new fining agent, especially synthetic substitutes, would not be approved for use without rigorous testing both in Europe and by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. As yet there are no suitable alternatives available.

FURTHER INFORMATION
You may wish to contact the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association (former Brewers Society) for further information.
Tel No. - 0207 486 4831

With kind regards,

Freya Kelly

Guinness Communication Centre.

Question: has anyone ever actually given up Guinness because of this? I could see giving up a lot of things (I'm dating a non-vegan veggie) but not that.

I'm a pretty strict vegan, and I started avoiding Guiness after finding out about the fish bladders.

*shakes head* I've been a vegetarian for many many years (not Vegan, which to my mind - not to derail too much - is not only an extremely difficult diet, but kind of silly really) and the only thing that comes to mind when reading that list is that if you are so anal retentive that you are checking minor additives to alchohol, you have larger issues than following your chosen diet. - HAHA

"As you are probably aware, beer is brewed from purely vegetable products - malt, unmalted cereals (sometimes), sugar, hops and water. Similarly, most of the processing aids are also of non-animal origin. The exception is isinglass finings. These are a very pure form of protein derived from the swim bladders of certain species of tropical fish. Finings are traditionally used throughout the British brewing industry to help remove suspended yeast and thus improve the clarity of the beer (and are also used to clarify some wines). As yet, no other substance has been found to be as effective. With keg beers (eg lagers and smooth beers) and beers in can and bottle, the vast majority of the finings are removed by filtration (although there may be trace amounts left). With cask conditioned beers (ie what CAMRA call 'real ale') most of the finings will be with the yeast sediment at the bottom of the cask."

Tonight is the first Semaphores gig.

We are playing at the Vine in Leeds.

Im excited and nervous.

I hope my friends come along to support me and danny and thom. I'm not sure if this will make me more nervous but i'd rather have my friends about than not.

My brother and his gf are coming to watch me. This is ace, and means a lot to me.

We have a final practise at 3.30pm today so ive just been getting some tidying up done as both mine and danns rooms were a pig sty and there was hoovering to be done.

I feel much better now its tidy in my room i feel like i could actually do some uni work in here now.

Last night i made lasagne from scratch for me rosh and danny, i didnt actually get to eat any of it as just as it was coming out of the oven i had to leave for work which SERIOUSLY pissed me off.

Just to make matters worse i fell over running to work straight into a puddle and then subsequently spent 5 hours at work covered in mud and water. My manager kept asking me to "get to work" as i was trying to clean the blood off my arm and all the crappy muddy water off my skin. Fucking wanker.

Ive come to realise that no matter where you work your manager is always going to be a knob at times, just because it takes a certain type of person to want to be a boss and tell everyone what to do.

Im listening to Danny practise vocals in his room and it sounds really good, i hope i don't ruin everything tonight and mess up, the only thing im worried about really is that i wont be able to hear the drums and my own voice then i'll sound shit.

I have VERY little confidence in the sound of my voice, basically coz i really dont think i can sing but im assured by danny that i sound fine.

Its gunna be so cool to play a pixies song live, ive never heard a band cover pixies before, apart from placebo. Need to go see Dave today about my Pixies lyrics tattoo actually. Tell him what im thinking and see how much its gunna cost danny :D

Im starving, hope to see a few of you kids at the gig tonight :)

erm

I turned on the news today to hear that the london terrorist bombers live in the immediate area of my new house in hyde park. Im quite worried about this. There are helicopters all over the sky, police, explosions and lots of terrifying stuff. How, out of all the possible places in the country do the stupid people live down the road from our new house?

We have been advised to stay in our homes in case they decide to blow themselves up. Great.

London [May. 31st, 2005|10:57 am]
Well hello.

Just wanted to say that there was a really long entry that shud be before this one but ive left my written journal in london so ill have to type it up when i get it back.

This weekend me and danny went to London for my skin deep shoot. It was one of the best weekends ive had in the last few years and im so happy that i cud spend it with danny. :D

We were staying in chalk farm on Jude Law's road, hehe how cool, Johnny who we were staying with saw chris martin wandering around in the daytime as well, i really cant get my head around it, its a completely different world altogether.

On saturday we got there and went for a look around the markets in camden, there were so many things i wanted to buy! but im uber poor right now so i just treated myself to a new backpack. There were some SO HOT knee highs in this cool japanese stall but they were £13 :O I shall buy then next time im in London which i hope shall be in a cpl of weeks. We went to see tower bridge and a huge ship HMS Bristol i think it was called. We walked along London bridge and watched the sun setting. :D

We went back to johnnys and got drunk/stoned and slept on a gorg matress it was SO comfy!

Got up on the sunday and went to Hasdlesdon where the shoot was, it was in a medium sized terrace house which was painted bright yellow and was very cool. Ashley the photographer opened the door and he was NOTHING like i expected, hehe, he was completely gay looking, many ear piercings, a nose ring, shaved head with a long blonde fringe and a full face of make-up. He was really friendly looking but had his sunglasses on for the entire day which was really odd.

The studio was cool, backdrops on this kinda pulley system so they cud change them there were so many lights, umbrellas, stands, cameras it was really ace. I met Vicky and Amanda and chatted to them for a while over a cuppa and got ready, we started with some group pics, then i did a couple of reels just by myself, and there were a few taken of the other girls alone too.

From the moment i got there i felt really comfortable, the woman whose house it was was really cool, a foreign lady who was obviously a cool hippy back in the day, she had some great work too. There were a lot of gay images around the house, her son is a model too, and he was on the walls. It was really cool to see men on the walls, coz id expected it to be all really exposed pics of woman, so that was cool.

I felt happy with how i looked, for a change, i felt comfortable, and i think that will be obvious in the pics, i really hope it is.

Ashley is going to put my picture out for me too, which is ace, he might be organizing a shoot for BIZARRE magazine too, which is cool, coz i buy that and its a cool mag :D

On the first night at johnnys we played "a question of pop" which was a board game about pop music but it was mainly from the 60's and 70's so me and danny didnt really have much of a clue, johnny was laughing at us and choosing the questions he was gunna ask us depending on what he thought we wud know, it was funny, coz johnny is about 40 i think so he had an advantage!

On the second night we ended up stoned and playing scrabble, how rock and roll is that! It progressed to "Johnnys price is right" and then forefits for the losers, this included Johnny eating a spoonful of mustard, errrrrr i couldnt have done that. Danny was next with a spoonful of cottage cheese HAHAHHAHAHA we all know how danny loves raw cheese and cottage cheese has got to be the most slimy version! He was 1/2 sick in his hand, it was rank!

Next they thought it wud be funny to make me eat gravy granuals. It was the most awful thing i have ever done, danny has a video of the whole ordeal so ill get him to put it in his journal. This was followed by me having eyes drawn on my ass, and danny having a freezer clip put onto his nipple! hahah, johnny then had to dance to a minute of black sabbeth with a mop as an air guitar, it was hillarious.

Ive just found out that Katherine and Tom have broken up, this makes me sad for Kath, all my hugs to her :)

So yea, amazing weekend all in all, the journies on the coach were fine, when we got back into manchester we decided to chill there for the afternoon so i gave kayley a call to see where she was at, and by chance she was around, which was ace! So we met up, got some food and sat in the sun in Piccadilly Gardens. It was nice.

I went back to Leeds and hung out with steph til the early hours.

Here are the pics.

So yea, i had tattooage for many hours yesterday, i am one happy bunny, dave is a creative guy, we had no outline, he did the whole thing freehand and i couldnt be happier, it was terrible on a pain level on the spine though, found it really hard, but i got into it after a while but after 5 hours dave was rather tired indeed, it still needs finishing off but the main parts are now in place. Im real pleased:D:D
